Soteria Conservation is a textile focused studio offering interventive and preventive treatments of a museum standard, operating out of London, servicing clients internationally. The team of conservation experts collectively has experience working on some of the world’s most important and finest textiles for both the public and private sector.
We pride ourselves on delivering an exemplary service to our clients; built on a foundation of many years of study, honing skills and broadening our knowledge of textiles from all over the world, whether made 2000 years ago or only yesterday. We are solution orientated, focused on enabling access, whilst safeguarding for the future; each object receiving the same level of care and attention, no matter the size or scale.
Jessica Burgess ACR
Jessica founded Soteria Conservation in 2020. She holds a BA in Organics Conservation from the University of the Arts, London and is an ICON accredited conservator. She has worked at a number of studios, honing her practical skills, while gaining managerial experience. Projects have taken her as far as India, the Middle East and the USA.
Jessica has lectured widely, covering topics such as mounting, conservation practices for makers, and caring for textiles within archive collections.
Jessica is driven by the complex challenges of conservation, whether coordinating projects aboard, developing the team or researching forefront practices. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary learning, working with other industries to enhance and development new skills.
Jennifer Jenkins ACR (Studio Manager / Principal Conservator)
Jennifer is an ICON accredited conservator, who has worked in textile conservation for over ten years. Graduating with a BA in Textile Design from Leeds University, she went on to gain an MPhil in Textile Conservation at Glasgow University.
Since qualifying, she has worked for several private studios throughout the UK, developing a strong understanding of carpet conservation, while solidifying her knowledge of textile history, gaining a particular interest in complex and unique weaves.
Jennifer oversees the smooth running of the studio, with a keen focus on the practical side of the business. Her pragmatic approach and ability to nurture talent within the team, enables us to develop as a studio, furthering research and techniques in the industry.
Maria Antao (Senior Conservator)
Maria joined Soteria Conservation in 2021. Her interest in conservation came early, through a work experience opportunity as a teen. This led her to embark on achieving an MA in Conservation of Cultural Heritage at Lincoln University. Prior to this, she gained a BA in Fashion Design, which solidified her sewing skills and understanding of materials and garment structure.
She strives to further her manual skills and research, by attending workshops on the latest developments and materials in conservation.
Maria treats some of the most complex objects; highly skilled at stain removal and executes the finest repair stitching.
Megan Robotham (Assistant Conservator)
Megan is our newest member of the team, joining Soteria Conservation in 2023. She has a BA in Fashion Design and a strong background in garment development. Her career began working for Iris Van Herpen, as the Haute Couture Textile and Technique Developer. The skills she gained there, have transferred seamlessly across to textile conservation. She maintains a keen interest in costume and costume history, while also striving to further her studies in conservation science.
Her understanding of modern materials, contemporary techniques within the textile industry and her highly skilful sewing abilities, allows her to provide current and cutting-edge treatments.
